Greek women believed that they could control the sex of their unborn children by using roots of orchids. If the father consumed large amounts of large, new orchid roots, the child would be male, and if the mother ate small orchid roots, the child would be female. Because of this, orchids symbolize family and fertility. Thus, a tattoo of an orchid also symbolizes the same ideas.
