Dragon Tattoo – The Winged Inspiration

As the cross tattoo, the dragon tattoo is also a design inspiring many tattooers and tattoo enthusiasts. The dragon is typically a large reptile with magical powers that usually can breathe fire. The word dragon comes from the Greek word drakon which means serpent. Dragons are generally represented as gigantic reptiles with huge claws, serpent tail, bat-like wings, a crested head and crusty scaled skin. The dragon is a very interesting mythological creature, influencing many cultures around the Globe.
Dragon tattoos can have different representations; some are traditional, while others are unusual and imaginative. When most people think of dragons they associate the word with the western dragon. This dragon has a long body, two bat-like wings, a long neck, four legs and scaly skin. Sure, these dragons breathe fire and some of them have spiked tails. They are mostly considered to be evil creatures, so those who choose the western dragons as symbols for their tattoos do it to inspire power, rebellion and danger. Usually bikers and rough men choose the western dragon pattern.

The Eastern dragons are often used in tattooing as well. These dragons are considered kind and intelligent and are often portrayed with a pearl in their mouth or in their claws. Their bodies are made up of many different animals of the Earth, but they keep an important similarity to the western dragons: the serpent body, which inspires many tattooists in their creations.

Dragon designs for tattoos are made by combining elements of both these two symbols – the western and the eastern dragons, and it is rare to see an exact representation of any. Many times the main design elements are used to create what tattooers call the "tribal dragon". This motive is generally preferred by women, due to the trend started by Angelina Jolie. The actress has a large tiger tattooed on her back and, under it, a dragon.

Many women also like the sweet little faerie dragons with butterfly wings. These tattoos are quite rare though, with Celtic dragons leading in popularity when it comes to tribal tattoos.
