Cross Tattoo – One of the Most Widespread Designs
The cross is one of the richest and most meaningful symbols in the history of tattoo and body art. A cross tattoo can symbolize eternal unity, as with the circle in the Celtic cross, or it can express faith in God – as the Christian crosses do.The symbolisms of the cross tattoos will vary, depending on the design of the crosses. The most widespread tattoo designs for crosses are Celtic. Many people from Ireland, Scotland and England get a Celtic tattoo representing a cross to show their pride in their ancestry. The tattoo design of the Celtic cross is made up of knots. The knots represent infinity and eternity. People tattooed with crosses designed with Celtic knots choose these symbols as expressions of their own believes.
The Christian cross with its four arms, represents God and the power of Spirit over matter. If the cross is inverted it usually symbolizes evil and the triumph of matter of Spirit, although in olden days the inverted cross was used within renegade sects in Christianity. Being one of the oldest religious symbols, the cross can be found in almost every culture. For instance, the ankh, also known as the Ansata cross, is the symbol of life in the Egyptian culture. Tattooers use it quite often in their tattoo designs, although not as often as the Celtic cross. Another symbol often used in tattoo designs is the Rose Cross, a beautiful pictogram, where the rose represents the redemptive influence of the blood of Christ. The Rose Cross is a representation of the cycle of death and rebirth, and tattooists can create quite amazing designs using these two elements. Another cross symbol chosen by many tattoo enthusiasts is the crucified serpent – a snake nailed to a cross. Other crosses with very interesting designs for tattoos are: the cross fitché, that looks very much like a sword; the cross of scientology; the Irish Brendan's and Bride's crosses and Wolf's cross – a modern form of the Mjolnir (Thor's hammer).
With so many meanings and shapes, there is no wonder that the cross is one of the most widespread tattoo designs.
